The outdoor environment doesn't follow your session plan. The surface changes. The weather turns. A stranger walks through. A participant freezes at height. Great outdoor coaches don't just cope with these moments — they coach through them.

This one-day CPD takes your existing movement coaching skills outside and pressure-tests them against the real world. You'll learn to read urban environments as both risk landscapes and teaching tools, manage groups without walls to contain them, and build sessions that can flex in real time when conditions demand it.

What You'll Cover

Reading the outdoor environment How to conduct a structured environmental audit before your group arrives — identifying hazard layers, coaching potential, and the features of a space that most coaches walk straight past.

Risk management and your legal duty of care The real difference between indoor and outdoor coaching obligations. Dynamic Risk Assessment in practice, emergency protocols for outdoor locations, and how to make confident, defensible decisions when conditions change mid-session.

The environment as your coaching tool How to stop treating outdoor spaces like inconvenient gyms and start using them as the curriculum. Affordance theory, the Constraints-Led Approach, and the art of designing invitations to move rather than instructions to follow.

Planning for the unplannable Outdoor session plans can't be linear. You'll build modular, adaptive plans using the Spine Model — a Plan A, B and C approach that lets you contract, expand, or pivot without losing the thread of your session.

Group management in open spaces Voice projection, positioning, recall systems, and how to hold a group's attention when there are no walls doing it for you. Including how to handle the public, manage transitions through shared spaces, and coach someone without losing sight of everyone else.

Observed outdoor coaching practice The day closes with a structured micro-teach: you plan it, you deliver it, you receive honest feedback against a clear outdoor-specific observation checklist. Then you reflect — individually and as a group — on what the day has shifted in your practice.

What You'll Take Away

  • Confidence to assess and coach in any outdoor environment
  • A toolkit of environmental audit methods and risk management frameworks
  • A modular outdoor session plan template you can use immediately
  • A set of physical resources: scenario cards, assessment cards, observation checklist, and session log
  • Eight CPD hours towards your continued professional development record

Who This Course Is For

This CPD is designed for coaches who already hold a recognised parkour qualification and want to develop their practice in outdoor and urban environments. It's equally relevant for:

  • Parkour coaches currently delivering mostly indoors who want to take sessions outside
  • PE teachers using parkour as part of outdoor education programmes
  • Outdoor education and adventure sports coaches adding movement literacy to their practice
  • Community coaches working in urban environments with young people

Prerequisites: 16+ years of age. Recognised sports coaching/teaching qualification.

What Makes This Different

Most coaching courses teach you to coach. This one teaches you to coach out there — in the space where your participants actually live, where the unexpected is the norm, and where the environment itself is the most powerful teaching tool available to you. It's a day of real decisions, real conditions, and real reflection.
